philosophicI WONDER How many dead Iraqis does it take to fill up an SUV?

politics COMMENTsmoking gunJanuary 12, 2003 So far the UN weapons inspectors have found no evidence of weapons of mass destruction (or WMD as that clever guy Ari likes to call them) no smoking gun, as it were, in Iraq; but Duhbya et. al. say that doesn't matter because they know for a fact that Saddam Hussein has them. How is it they are so sure? Despite evidence to the contrary... or lack of evidence, since they are impossibly trying to prove a negative, the Bush administration is absolutely certain. How can that be? Perhaps we should ask Rummy. It seems our esteemed Mr. Rumsfeld was a special presidential envoy to Iraq under the first President Bush (Bush I) and met with Saddam himself in December 1983 during the Iran/Iraq war. That was a time when the Iraqi leader was regularly using chemical weapons and the United States was supplying His Evilness with intelligence and arms to help fight Iran. It has been reported in the Washington Post that both the Reagan and Bush I administrations "authorized the sale to Iraq of numerous items that had both military and civilian applications, including poisonous chemicals and deadly biological viruses, such as anthrax and bubonic plague." Perhaps Rummy found out something then about Iraq's WMDs or perhaps he knows something about how much raw materials they were supplied with since he was part of the gang doing the supplying? The Post also reported that a 1994 Senate Banking Committee investigation turned up dozens of biological agents shipped to Iraq during the mid-80s under license from the Commerce Department, which included various strains of anthrax. The Commerce department also approved the export of insecticides to Iraq despite widespread suspicion they were being used for chemical warfare. So it seems Duhbya, Rummy and the gang know Iraq has these weapons but they seem unwilling to just lay the evidence on the table. Makes me wonder HOW they know. Perhaps we need to look for the smoking gun a little closer to home. © Copyright iriguchi 2003 |
