BUSHISM

I do think we need for a troop to be able to house his family. That's an important part of building morale in the military. W. – Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, March 12, 2001

the new imperialism

March 29, 2001

"This is a world that is much more uncertain than the past. In the past we were certain, we were certain it was us versus the Russians in the past. We were certain, and therefore we had huge nuclear arsenals aimed at each other to keep the peace. That's what we were certain of. ... You see, even though it's an uncertain world, we're certain of some things. We're certain that even though the 'evil empire' may have passed, evil still remains. We're certain there are people that can't stand what America stands for. ... We're certain there are madmen in this world, and there's terror, and there's missiles and I'm certain of this, too: I'm certain to maintain the peace, we better have a military of high morale, and I'm certain that under this administration, morale in the military is dangerously low." – Albuquerque, N.M., the Washington Post, May 31, 2000

Does this sound like the ranting of an unstable person to anyone else besides me? These are the thoughts of the man who is shaping our foreign policy. These are the sage words of the man with his finger on the button of one of the most, if not THE most powerful nuclear arsenal on earth. Comforting thought isn't it? I would be very alarmed if Gee Dubya lived next door to me and I knew he owned a grenade. Well he lives next door to everyone on earth and he owns an arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles. And he recently had Colin Powell travelling around the world pounding his chest and shouting about our upcoming Star Wars anti-ballistic missile system all the while ignoring the grave concerns of our own allies.

Reminds me of the third-grade bully who was always talking tough and pushing people around. When someone tougher finally came along or two or three kids ganged up, he was all alone with no one in his corner to back him up. Resident Bush has adopted a similar isolationist posture where he is basically telling the world, "I'm Gee Dubya. I'm self-important and I can do whatever I want." He pissed off the Russians by ejecting 51 of their US diplomats. He pissed off the Chinese by negotiating with Taiwan to sell them advanced weapons. He pissed off the North Koreans by saying we're not sure if they're living up to our treaties. He pissed off the Japanese, the Germans (and the rest of the EU) by trashing the Kyoto Protocol. The bully stands alone. But luckily he's a uniter not a divider, right?

Indeed there are madmen in this world... several of them are running this country. And indeed there is terror... every clear thinking individual on earth feels it because of who is in the White House. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell... terror alright... sheer unadulterated terror. This gang of bullies wants to play army in the worst way, and at the rate they're going they just might get to. But I suspect it won't be their sons and daughters that die in all the fun.
