the nanny police are looking out for you! aren't you glad?!?March 16, 2001 Came across a most interesting group the other day. They call themselves the Guest Choice Network and describe themselves like this... "We like to think of ourselves as the embodiment of common sense. Officially, we're a coalition of more than 30,000 restaurant and tavern operators working together to protect the public's right to a full menu of dining and entertainment choices through education, training and public outreach. Unofficially, the Guest Choice Network includes anybody who stands up against the growing fraternity of food cops, health care enforcers, vegetarian activists and meddling bureaucrats who "know what's best for you. (nannys)" Basically it appears they advocate for food producers to be able to do anything they want to your foods and for THEM TO BE ABLE TO SELL IT TO YOU without telling you what they did. I am SO GLAD they are looking out for my right to be served irradiated, geneticially altered foods without my knowledge. The writing has the tone of an ill-mannered 9-year old who loves to call people names and say, "Liar, liar pants on fire." This apparently is the network's chosen hook... irreverent humor. I'll admit its pretty entertaining. Frightening, but entertaining. They mostly just say that everyone who says bad things about altered foods is wrong and they're right. Try as I might, I couldn't find any training or public outreach resources on the site and their membership page didn't work. But the site actually was quite useful for finding groups who would prefer our foods not be freakish mutations. The Guest Choice Network loves to make fun of people and groups that disagree with them but they are kind enough to provide links to many of their target's sites. This was very useful. I guess I should try writing to their Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, D.C., address so I can thank them for their hard work on my behalf. Gosh with an address like that you might suspect they were just another bunch of corporate lobbyists trying to appear like a watchdog group selflessly looking out for the public good... nah, only paranoid nannys would think that. And besides, even if they were lobbyists... alcohol makers, genetically-altered-food producers, and tobacco producers need their advocates too, don't they? The Guest Choice Network is run by Rick Berman, 57, a lawyer who runs a research and communications firm. Mr. Berman also acts as the general counsel for the American Beverage Institute, a trade organization that represents restaurants that serve alcohol. What a SURPRISE! proud to be a nanny... dave © Copyright iriguchi 2001 |
