natural home STORYour new clothes dryerMay 1, 2001 In our continuing effort to reduce our energy consumption at home, we installed a new low tech, ultra energy-efficient clothes dryer over the weekend. While our current electric dryer is only two years old and quite energy efficient itself, our new dryer is remarkable! After an initial investment of $13 dollars the rest was constructed from materials we had around the house, it costs virtually nothing to run. It reduces wear and tear on clothes making them last longer and it gives clothes a wonderful outdoor fresh smell. That's right, it's a clothes line. Using two old volleyball-net poles that I've inexplicably been storing for the past 15 years (I just knew they'd come in handy one day), we built a 4-line clotheline on the west side of the house in an area that gets sun all afternoon. In addition to drying our clothes it will help keep that side of the house cooler by shading the only exterior wall that gets direct afternoon summer sun. It's much quieter than our current dryer, won't warm the house in summer and drying our clothes is now essentially free! Our first loads of laundry on the line took about half an hour to dry. Simple living! |
