the call

The Call

The call comes in the still morning air, the stars still bright in the sky
Her voice low, gravely, a periodic rumble in the silence
During the day her calls are overcome by life
But right now, her voice is clear
She wants me, and I need her

I meet her at first light, her voice strong and constant now
Rising and falling with each break
Each wave stroking the sand as it ends its journey
Then pulling back, beckoning
She wants me, and I need her

The sand is cool under my feet as I approach
But the water feels like silk as I enter
To my knees, to my waist, fighting the blend of earth and sea and sky
Finally, diving, breaking free of earth and into her grasp
She wants me, and I need her

Under the whitewater, gliding below the tumult
Up for air, water swirling, my arms get no traction in the froth
The water clears, moving again, toward her next assault
But I am beyond the break, outside, where she can only tease me with her swell
She wants me, and I need her

Patient now, feeling her mood, flowing with her energy
Looking for the opportunity I crave
To ride a disturbance borne thousands of miles away
To feel a force created by wind and tides, and ultimately, the energy of the universe
She wants me, and I need her

My chance is here, position, timing, timing
The wave rises, a single stroke, kick like hell
Across the face, stay high, feel the power
Closing out, down the face, under and up away from the falls, heart pounding
She has me, and for a moment, I was part of her
